In the end Fayetteville ranked #6 in the "overall" small cities category with Bellingham, WA placing #1. We scored #1 in the Environmental Standards and Participation category; no doubt buoyed by City Plan 2025 and the Fayetteville Alternative Transportation and Master Plan. We also scored well in Green Space and Water Quality. For more info go to NRDC's Smarter Cities. Seattle was ranked the #1 large city in America.
I'm always a little skeptical of ranking systems and their subjectivity. For instance, we did not finish in the top 10 in air quality despite being rated #1 by COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) digest in air quality in 2007 (COPD Digest).
The good news is NRDC did some independent research for this project to go along with a questionnaire for each of the cities. In the end it's great to be recognized by the NRDC in this fashion. Just one more reason why Fayetteville is such a great place to live.
