Mr. Begley is a nice guy and has certainly made his imprint as an environmental activist, but I only got to speak with him for about five minutes total. The things that really impressed me the most were the 20 or so Fayetteville residents at the lunch AND this amazing place called Brick House Kitchen!
They have gardens around the restaurant on South School where they grow a lot of their own vegetables and herbs. They use mostly locally grown or raised food and that which isn't local has a purpose; like the fair trade cocoa beans David Lewis described. Incredible!
And we have such talent in our little region like Karen McSpadden from Winrock International, Michele Halsell from the Applied Sustainability Center or Don Moseley who oversees the operations of Wal Mart stores, including all of the things they're doing on the energy efficiency.
Rob Sharp was there and Louise Schaper and Alan Mantooth. Orlo and David Stitt from Stitt Energy Systems. A whole crew from NCAT including their new VISTA, Katie Deaton who just happens to be the daughter of our Internal Auditor, Vickie Deaton. And I finally got to meet Hershey Garner as well. I know I'm stating the obvious to most, but we live in a pretty cool part of the world.
