Colors were easy so traffic signals were the first converts with their red, green, and yellow. BUT now we're starting to see street and pedestrian lights make the turn in earnest. Just in the last two months 26 lights were converted on Frisco Trail and the Town Center parking garage is fully converting to LEDs.
The Fayetteville Public Library has had LEDs in their parking garage for awhile and have experimented with an assortment of internal lights. The City has LED street lights on College Avenue and Joyce Blvd as well as fully converting all traffic signals in the city.
The beauty of it is that the general public hasn't noticed! That's because LEDs put out the same light, if not better, than standard lighting so there's no drop-off in performance. But for those of us following the utility and maintenance costs it makes a HUGE difference.
The Joyce Blvd lights have been in place for almost two years now and are 50 percent more efficient while Frisco Trail was costing about $60 per month last year, but now is a meager $11 per month.
AND LEDs are expected to last five times longer! I know I'm a dork like that for getting so excited about lights, but the dollars saved and carbon emissions reduced is off the charts with this new technology.
Look for more LEDs in the not too distant future. The City scored a $150,000 grant to install new LEDs on Scull Creek Trail as well as retrofit existing pedestrian and street lights in the city.
